Mosquitoes and Ticks

These seasonal pests are a nuisance for everyone.

The Most Common Pests

Mosquitoes are one of the most common annoyances in Canada, and for good reason. Not only do they prey on campers and hikers – who know what they’ve signed up for – they also infiltrate our yards, gardens, and playgrounds. The telltale bite of a mosquito can prevent you from enjoying your patio to the fullest, or ruin your neighbourhood barbecue. Worse, mosquitoes can carry diseases such as West Nile Virus, making them a dangerous health risk for humans.

Another familiar nuisance to Canadians are ticks. While tick bites might not be as immediately irritating as mosquito bites, they can become a serious problem in the long run. Ticks can carry a wide range of diseases, from Lyme Disease to Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. They’re sneaky too; many people who have been bit by ticks say that it took them days to realize what had happened.

Mosquito and Tick Control

There are a few simple measures you can take yourself to help get a mosquito or tick population under control. First, make sure that there are no pools of standing water around the exterior of your home, including small containers that might fill up with rainwater. Mosquitoes need standing water to breed, so removing it will help reduce their numbers. Also be sure to keep your lawn trimmed, as ticks love tall grasses and brush. It is crucial dispose of any empty bird or rodent nests as well, because they are some of ticks’ favourite places to infest.
